A WOMAN SHALL COMPASS A MAN

A WOMAN SHALL COMPASS A MAN

How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.
Jer. 31:22

This is one of the Old Testament prophecies that historically, has been applied to the virgin birth of our Lord. In the 1599 edition of the Geneva Bible (actually this was the first Protestant Study Bible) the editors applied this verse in Jeremiah to the virgin birth of Christ and also to the future fruitfulness of the spiritual Jerusalem. Think about it, the Lord has created a new thing in the earth, a virgin shall conceive and bring forth a son. No one but the Lord would ever do such an unusual thing, actually the most impossible of all of the miracles in the Bible, the birth of Christ without a human Father. If Christianity was a man made religion, no one would have had the audacity to try to sell the virgin birth, man would have pitched something somewhat more believable. The Lord loves to shock the minds of man; born of a virgin, born in an animal stall, probably the feeding trough of a farm animal, talk about unprecedented.
What do you think Joseph’s family thought about the virgin birth, or Jesus’s brothers and sisters, or even the neighbors in Nazareth. No, the virgin birth has always been a hard sell.

Matthew Henry also taught that this “new thing” was referring to the birth of Christ. Here are his thoughts about this passage.
“Many good interpreters understand this new thing created in that land to be the incarnation of Christ, which God used with an eye on bringing them back to that land, and which had sometimes been given them for a sign. A woman, the virgin Mary, enclosed in her womb the Mighty One; for so Geber, the word here used, signifies; and God is called Gibbor, the Mighty God ( xxxii. 18), as also is Christ in Isa. ix. 6, where his incarnation is spoken of, as it is supposed to be here. He is El-Gibbor, the mighty God. Let this assure them that God would not cast off this people, for that blessing was to be among them.”

Our modern world, and many modern preachers and teachers have moved far away from the supernatural nature of Christ, His life, His ministry, His birth, and His death. Maybe it’s time to return again to the ancient paths and follow the Lord down the path of His amazing supernatural plan. Christmas, the virgin birth, this is unprecedented, only God could come up with something like this.

With the english translation resulting in the phrase”to compass man” I’m interested in the greek etiology. ‘ Compass’ can mean direct, encircle (i.e. perhaps Mary ‘s womb encircling Christ), to understand, to succeed in carrying out, accomplish and therein lies the confusion. Perhaps my brother and putt-putt partner, Mark Planchard, can shed some light on the correct greek meaning/s. In the Light and Love of Christ, dan frisard

I would like to preface my comments on today’s devotional with these statements: one whom I regard with great respect in the things of God said (paraphrase), God’s word goes out and does not return void but accomplishes its’ purpose. God’s word meets each person where they are and speaks to that person what that person needs and something else to another as they need. Saying that I reference Yesterday’s devotional speaking of digging for treasure, your treasure, as placed there by God for each of His children. We must each uncover that treasure God has for each of us.

Nĕqebah is a noun (femine) meanings: female, woman, female child or female animal. The root word is naqab being a verb meaning to pierce, perforate, bore, appoint, designate or be designated.

Cabab is a verb meaning to turn, turn about or around or aside or back or towards, go about or around, surround, encircle, change direction – to enclose, envelop

Geber is a noun (masculine) meanings: opposite a woman, a male – even used as male offspring, newly born
The root word is Gabar and is a verb to mean to prevail, have strength, be strong, be powerful, be mighty, be great also most interestingly to me – to confirm (a covenant), give strength.

    My thoughts:

God speaking to Israel, His people, but His words are, various translations:

    “thou backsliding daughter.”
    “O faithless daughter”
    “O unfaithful daughter”
    “My wayward daughter”

To me the word ‘daughter’ implies blood relation which is intimate rather than ‘His people’.

‘for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.’

‘A woman shall compass a man.’ This statement is being defined by ‘for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth,’ to me means something never done before. Keeping that thought in mind as a foundation to the meaning of ‘A woman shall compass a man’ and referring to the research into word meanings I would translate that last phrase as the Lord is appointing, designating a female child or woman to envelop (carry in her womb) a male child, no ordinary male child. A male child of great power and might that is to confirm a covenant.

How awesome a God we serve that even though we prove ourselves unworthy of Him (for we are sinners and Holy God cannot have sin in His presence), He calls us His children and displays His love for us in sending Christ Jesus to die for us while we were sinners. He does it in such a way that no man can argue or reason He is not God, virgin birth! By what He has done, we are in right relationship with God and granted access into His presence. Go boldly!!!!
