A PLACE TO STAND

Gal. 3:11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.”

Archimedes said he could move the whole world if he had a lever long enough. The only problem, he would have no place to stand. Martin Luther found a place to stand to move the world. He discovered again that God speaks to man through His written word. This simple revelation changed not only Martin’s life, it began a reformation that changed the world and still reverberates through society today. Luther made his stand on this simple truth found in God’s word, “the just shall live by faith”. He found that man could never be righteous before God by his good works, all of us fall miserably short. Luther found that man stands righteous before God by faith in the work of Christ on the cross. Forgiveness that comes by faith brings us into the peace of God. Here is an excerpt about Luther and how he made his stand that changed the world from Luther’s biography written by Gene Edward Veith, Jr.

“On April 18, 1521, a thirty seven year old monk from a small town in Germany found himself hauled in front of the emperor. The monk had struggled with guilt and futile attempts to improve himself until he started studying the Bible and came to understand what had been all but forgotten in the church of his day: the gospel that our salvation depends not on our works but on the grace of God through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This was such good news to this monk that he started teaching it, which in turn, required him to teach against the false spiritual system that had kept him and that continued to keep most people in bondage.
He took issue with the way the church was selling indulgences instead of proclaiming the gospel. The sound of his hammer nailing those theses to the church door reverberated far beyond his small town in ways he never anticipated or intended. Before long, the pope of Rome was trying to destroy him. Then the Holy Roman emperor joined the fray. On that day in April it all came to a head. The monk was being tried by the emperor and all his vassals, with the church through the pope’s representatives serving as prosecutor. At the end, it all came down to a very simple question: will you take back everything you have been teaching about the gospel? Or will you be cast out of the church and state as a heretic and be burned at the stake? The monk replied, “ Here I stand.” Martin Luther had a place to stand. And he did move the world. He changed his life. He changed the church. He changed the culture.”

We all can move our own world if we find a place to stand. Make your stand on God’s word today.
