UPHOLDS ALL THINGS

UPHOLDS ALL THINGS

who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
Heb.1:3

To me, this is one of the most amazing passages in the scriptures, Jesus upholds all things by the word of His power. This is more than poetic language, actually it can be taken quite literally, Jesus is seated at the the right hand of the Father, ruling all things. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to this resurrected man. Christ is truly reigning as a sovereign king.
As for me, this brings an incredible peace into my life, the belief in the sovereignty of God has changed everything for me.
What do we have to worry about? What kinds of things is He upholding when it relates to our world? He is directing everything. He is orchestrating the political events around the globe, raising up and pulling down leaders to fulfill His kingdom plans. He is ruling the economic climate, constantly reminding us that our dependency is on Him and not the systems of this world. He is upholding the climate, including the storms and earthquakes in “diverse places”, even when a “Katrina” comes for a visit. He has proved over and again that He comes near in the worst of times.
But what about my personal life? He is upholding all things, for a child of God there is nothing to be troubled about. Your health is in His hands, your finances are being upheld, your family is covered, He is watching over and harmonizing all the events in your life. How does this truth effect my life? For me, it is incredibly humbling. To see this kind of love for me creates a hunger to know and serve Him more. This kind of love awakens my desire to search for Him in the scripture and to know Him and honor Him more with my life. Some may say that believing in a sovereign God produces laziness, that God does everything and we need to do nothing. Nothing could be further from the truth, one glimpse of His eternal power and sovereign rule will win your heart forever. Only someone who has never seen His sovereign power could possibly believe that this truth would produce prayerlessness. One glimpse of this incredible King will bring you to your knees shouting with the redeemed in heaven, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!”

  1. that was a verry uplifting message it is were im at today we have had alot of health issues with my wife this year, it is only by the lords will she is still here with usand for how long she is here is only up to the lord and him only, you hear about other people going threw this but when it strikes close to your heart and loved ones it is a total different deal, i have learned give it to the lord in heart it is up to him how long we got it also shows me to redeem the time we have you never know when its time to go home its in his hands not ours so is our lives we belong to him

  2. The following scriptures come to mind, two being spoken by Jesus!
John 14:9 – Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (the express image of His person)
Matthew 4:4 – But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” (the word of His power)
2 Corinthians 5:21- For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. (He had by Himself purged our sins)

I thought to look at two words that jumped out at me in the scripture referenced in today’s devotional. Word & power.
The word ‘word’ in this passage is the Greek word rhēma, being ‘the spoken word’. Much like when God created all that is created He merely spoke and it was! WOW – that is power.
Of course saying that brings me to the next word in the text being ‘power’ and I would have been surprised if it would have been anything other than the Greek word dynamis.
That word is the power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature and power for performing miracles. That ‘power’ belongs only to God! I second your thoughts of that tremendous peace and at the same time I am undone by the overwhelming scope of the idea of this passage. This video came to mind by S.M.
