Matt. 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
We live in a restless world. Sometimes it feels like the tension in this world is going to cause a mass break out of high blood pressure related disease, or maybe it already has. Pressure over performance, pressure over physical appearance, financial pressure, health related pressure, and even pressure caused by politics or the national economic climate brought about by bad decisions. In the middle of this tension comes the words of His promise, the promise of rest for our souls. “come unto Me”. the simplest and most profound of all invitations, “Come unto Me and I will give you rest”. Augustine spoke probably his most famous line talking about this great invitation.
“Can any praise be worthy of the Lord’s majesty? How magnificent His strength!
How inscrutable His wisdom! Man is one of your creatures, Lord, and his instinct is to praise You. He bears about him the mark of death, the sign of his own sin, to remind him that You thwart the proud. But still, since he is part of Your creation, he wishes to praise You. The thought of You stirs him so deeply that he cannot be content unless he praises You, because You made us for Yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
I love that, “You made us for Yourself”. I was made for Him. I was made for loving Him. I was made for knowing Him. Coming to this understanding brings us to that place of rest in the middle of a restless world. Augustine went on to say our hearts are restless. Coming to that conclusion is vital if you want to change. Recognizing you have a problem, this restless problem, is the first step on the path to rest. The good news is this, that first step is all you need, one step toward Him and you will step out of tension into the rest of God. You will find rest and nourishment for your soul in the arms of His love. Here is a poem I wrote For Christmas several years ago inspired by Augustine’s timeless words. Enjoy!
Hungry Heart by Pastor Frank Bailey
Restless heart you struggle so
Searching for repose
Looking for a place of rest
That rest man seldom knows
Lonely heart – You’re grieving so
When will the sadness end
You get back up – to face the world
To just fall back again
Anxious heart – You worry so
Your trust seems far away
Who can you trust when things go wrong
Who will you trust today
Ambitious Heart- it never ends
Will there ever be a time
When you can stop this torrid rush
And place your hand in mine
Hungry Heart has found its food
To still this longing soul
To satisfy the heart of man
To make the sinner whole
In Bethlehem the House of Bread
Not far from Calvary
I gave my life for you my son
That you could feast on me
