THE DEATH OF ARROGANCE

Matt. 5:5 NLT – God blesses those who are humble,
for they will inherit the whole earth.

There are not many sermons about humility, for the most part what God considers humility would be called weakness or a failure mentality in today’s culture. Jesus actually said it is the humble that will inherit the earth. How would you define humility? Actually I can understand it by knowing what it is not. When God can down in my life twenty years ago, I was convicted of my pride and arrogance. Actually that is what happens when you become suddenly aware of true greatness. Only when Jesus walks in the room are we put in touch with who we really are. In a moment I was on the floor, stunned by His beauty and power, ashamed of my puffed up heart. True humility is a gift, it comes when He opens our eyes to His magnificence and our weakness. Matthew Henry speaks about humility seen in the life of the Roman Centurion who came to Christ on behalf of his servant. Check this out.

“Observe his great humility and self-abasement. After Christ had intimated his readiness to come and heal his servants, he expressed himself with the more humbleness of mind. Note, Humble souls are made more humble, by Christ’s gracious condescensions to them. Observe what was the language of his humility; Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, which speaks mean thought of himself, and high thoughts of our Lord Jesus. The centurion was a great man, yet he owned his unworthiness before God. Christ now made but a mean figure in the world, yet the centurion, looking upon him as a prophet, yea, more than a prophet, paid him this respect. The centurion came to Christ with a petition, and therefore expressed himself thus humbly. Note, In all our approaches to Christ, and to God through Christ, it becomes us to abase ourselves, and to lie low in the sense of our own unworthiness, as mean creatures and as vile sinners, to do any thing for God, to receive any good from him, or to have any thing to do with him.”

Humility is not natural, it is a gift from God. If we want to inherit the earth, it is essential. How can a man become humble? There is only one way. Humility is found laying on our face in His presence.
