Heb. 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
God’s word is alive. I didn’t always realize that but when I did, it changed everything. It happened for me one Saturday just several months after I had been born again. Up until that time I was pretty much stuck on the gospels. I knew Jesus had it together, I wasn’t so sure about the others. That particular Saturday I actually spent the day reading most all of Paul’s epistles. Somewhere in 1 Corinthians it hit me, the Bible was the inspired word of God. All of it was God breathed. This was revolutionary for me. Have you seen this yet? When you do, it changes the way you look at everything. Now you have God’s living words in your hand, He is not dead and He is still speaking to humans today. He is speaking through the written word. The world was changed when Martin Luther saw this and began to live like it. Here are some words from John Piper about that historic revelation.
“One of the great rediscoveries of the Reformation—especially of Martin Luther—was that the Word of God comes to us in the form of a book. In other words, Luther grasped this powerful fact: God preserves the experience of salvation and holiness from generation to generation by means of a book of revelation… In 1539, commenting on Psalm 119, Luther wrote, “In this psalm David always says that he will speak, think, talk, hear, read, day and night and constantly—but about nothing else than God’s Word and Commandments. For God wants to give you His Spirit only through the external Word.” This phrase is extremely important. The “external Word” is the book. And the saving, sanctifying, illuminating Spirit of God, he says, comes to us through this “external Word.”
It may sound funny but this personal revelation and conviction comes when you are reading the Bible. This is where the Holy Spirit operates, He always has. The three persons of the trinity always work in harmony. After all, Jesus is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit is the one Who breathes the Word of God. Go ahead, open up your Bible. God is speaking and today He wants to speak to you.
