IF YOU ONLY KNEW

John 4:10 ¶ Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

The woman at the well in Samaria had no idea who she was talking to; regrettably that’s the way it is with most all of us today. We think we know who He is but get stuck on religious cliches and preconceived ideas of who Jesus is. Do we really “know” who He is? Just think about it, He has lived from eternity. How could that even be? He is the creator of all things, I can’t even remotely understand how big creation is much less how great the One is who made it. Then there is the sovereignty thing, He rules everything from the rising sun to the tides to the rising and falling of nations, kind of past my comprehension. Also, there is the fact that He became human, He is still a human, and is still God. Jesus said if we only knew Who He was we would ask for a drink. Matthew Henry spoke about this in his comments on today’s verse, check it out.
“If you knew the gift of God, that is, as the next words explain it, who it is that saith, Give me to drink. If you knew who I am. She saw him to be a Jew, a poor weary traveller; but he would have her know something more concerning him that did yet appear. Jesus Christ is the gift of God, the richest token of God’s love to us, and the richest treasure of all good for us; a gift, not a debt which we could demand from God; not a loan, which he will demand from us again, but a gift, a free gift. It is an unspeakable privilege to have this gift of God proposed and offered to us; to have an opportunity of embracing it: “He who is the gift of God is now set before thee, and addresses himself to thee; it is he that saith, Give me to drink; this gift comes a begging to thee.”
If we knew Who He was and knew the greatness of His gift our world would change. I have touched the edge of Who He is and found myself overwhelmed and amazed. Maybe today we can just be still for a moment, look to Him, and ask Him for a drink of this living water.

  1. So unfortunate that we dip in and out of our knowing who God is. If we could only just stay ‘there’, like he stays with Us, how much more powerful our lives would be on Earth!
