THE DESIRE OF ALL NATIONS

Hag. 2:6,7 ¶ “For thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the LORD of hosts.

One of my favorite Messianic prophecies is the one in today’s verse. Jesus is described as the Desire of all Nations. Many modern bible teachers and commentators say that this passage is not talking about Jesus. One of their reasons is that the world doesn’t desire Christ so how could He be called the Desire of all Nations. Of course not; in their fallen condition. That’s the beauty of God and His grace. He pulls back the veil just a little from our eyes and Christ becomes simply irresistible. In a moment He becomes the desire and delight of our soul. Inside of the heart of all people of all nations is an insatiable desire that can only be met in Christ, the Desire of all Nations. Here is a quote from Solomon’s Song and comments from Jonathan Edwards on today’s verse.

Song 5:16 His mouth is most sweet,

and he is altogether desirable.

This is my beloved and this is my friend,

O daughters of Jerusalem.

“Christ is altogether lovely in the eyes of a Christian. There is nothing in Christ, no attribute or qualification, but that he is lovely to him on the account of it. Not only his goodness and grace, but his justice and sovereignty is lovely to the Christian. “He is altogether lovely.” So also the Christian may be said to be wholly lovely in the eyes of Christ; for though there be much remaining deformity, yet ’tis as it were hidden from the eyes of Christ, that he sees it not. He doth not behold iniquity in Jacob, nor see [perverseness in Israel]. And therefore Christ says to his church, “Behold, thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.”
Our job and joy as a Christian is to present the desirableness of Christ to the hungry in the world. How can we do this? By delighting in God and displaying to the world the joy found only in Christ. Christmas time is our great opportunity to display Him. What is our song? “Joy to the world the Lord is come let earth receive her king.”

Say then with Francis, ‘ My Jesus, my love and my all!’ O Good Jesus, burst the cataract of Thy love, that its streams, yea seas, may flow down upon us, yea, inebriate and overwhelm us.”
