MARDI GRAS MADNESS

2Pet. 2:19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.

It was late on a Sunday night, many years ago, after spending the night sharing Christ at the Bacchus Parade in New Orleans, that today’s verse of scripture came into my mind. I guess I was in a semi state of shock at the level of godlessness and immorality that was so blatant on the streets that night. I was disgusted and really surprised at the arrogance I had encountered throughout the night. Some would mock, others just ignored us, and others claimed to be Christian and were just as much a part of Sodom as the rest of the crowd. That’s when this verse came to my mind as I was walking back to the car that evening. The revelers thought they were really free. The more alcohol that was consumed, the more promiscuous they were, the freer they thought they were. They actually thought our evangelism team was the one in bondage. What a twisted world. The slaves of sin are preaching freedom and accusing us of being slaves! Spiritual blindness is quite amazing.

True freedom only comes through Christ. It starts with forgiveness of sin. It continues with a changed life that results from being given a new heart. Freedom starts on the inside when the chains of sinful attraction are broken off of us. Like the famous hymn proclaims, “I once was blind but now I see; I once was bound but now I’m free”. Jesus Himself said it best, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. So if the Son sets you free you shall be free indeed”. Here are some comments from the Fire Bible on today’s verse.
“The spirit of lawlessness that promises freedom from godly restraints will be especially prevalent in society—and even in some churches—in the last days before Christ comes again. God’s moral absolutes—his standards of truth that are equally relevant for all people in all situations for all time—will be considered outdated and obsolete. Many within the church will view God’s standards as legalistic restrictions to personal freedom, self-fulfillment and happiness. As people set themselves up as the authority over their lives, they actually become slaves to their own corrupt nature and desires.”
So hopefully you have tasted the goodness of Christ. It is His goodness that satisfies and keeps us from falling back into the slavery of a sinful lifestyle. It is in knowing Him that we finally know freedom.
