HE REALLY LOVES

Matt. 14:14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

When the Lord saw the crowds and saw the misery in their faces, He was stirred in His soul. He loved them, He loves us; He loves you. He wasn’t willing to leave them in their misery so He set ought to do what only He could. First, He taught them the word of God. This is the true food for the soul that all of us need. Obviously, they weren’t getting that spiritual food from the religious leaders of their nation so Jesus began to teach and feed them His word. Secondly, He healed their bodies. Mankind is suffering in his body as a result of our fallen condition. It is His word and His touch that heals us. Jesus recognized the afflicted in the crowd that day and He did what only He can do, He began to heal their broken bodies. Lastly, He served up a plentiful feast. He multiplied the fish and the bread and the crowds who had followed Him for three days, they all ate their fill. Here are some thoughts from John Calvin on today’s verse.

“The other two Evangelists, and particularly Mark, state more clearly the reason why this compassion was awakened in the mind of Christ. It was because he saw famishing souls, whom the warmth of zeal had carried away from their homes and led into a desert place. This scarcity of teaching indicated a wretched state of disorder; and accordingly Mark says that Jesus was moved with compassion towards them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd….Mark says, that he began to teach them MANY things; that is, he spent a long time in preaching, that they might reap some lasting advantage. Luke says, that he spoke to them concerning the Kingdom of God, which amounts to the same thing.”
Jesus Christ is the same today as the day He performed this great miracle. Today He is also seated, this time at the right hand of the Father in heaven. He still looks on the multitudes who are pressing in close to receive from Him. He can’t ignore our plight, He has to respond. He is still moved with compassion for His sheep and He is still teaching, healing, and feeding all who come to Him.
